LOTR Balrog Tankard
The Balrog rises through flames and jagged rock on this officially licensed Lord of the Rings tankard, its dark wings and fiery head dominating the front of the sculpt. Tiny skulls sit among the lower details, while a branching flame-coloured handle carries the same heat and movement around the side.
Cast in resin and hand-painted, the reverse brings Gandalf into the scene beneath the words ‘You shall not pass’. Orange and yellow flames connect both sides of the tankard, while rocky textures, chain-like details and darker recesses give the sculpt more depth around the upper edge and base.

Fire and Defiance in Moria
The design draws on the confrontation between Gandalf and the Balrog in Moria, one of the most memorable moments in The Fellowship of the Ring. Rather than focusing on only one character, the tankard carries the opposing sides of that encounter around the same vessel, with the Balrog on the front and Gandalf answering from the reverse.
That gives the piece more narrative depth than a straightforward character tankard. The flames link both sides visually, while the shift from the Balrog’s horned, winged form to Gandalf’s defiant stance makes the scene readable as a confrontation rather than two unrelated motifs.
Why This Design Works
The sculpt relies heavily on contrast: bright flame tones against black wings, pale skulls against darker rock, and the branching handle against the heavier body of the tankard. Those changes in texture and colour keep the surface readable even with a lot of detail packed into the design.
Keep the Moria scene with more pieces from our Lord of the Rings Merchandise, or continue the sculpted drinkware theme through our Goblets and Tankards. The Balrog’s darker creature design also sits naturally beside figures from our Gargoyles, Grotesques and Horror collection.
Care and use
Support the body of the tankard when lifting and keep the sculpted handle clear of nearby objects. Dust the painted exterior gently with a soft, dry cloth and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for beverage use and cleaning, avoiding prolonged soaking of the decorated resin shell.
